When a bestselling debut novel from mysterious author J.Colby becomes the literary event of the year, Emiline reads it reluctantly. As an adjunct writing instructor at UC San Diego with her own stalled literary career and a bumpy long-term relationship, Emiline isn’t thrilled to celebrate the accomplishments of a young and gifted writer.

Yet from the very first page, Emiline is entranced by the story of Emerson and Jackson, two childhood best friends who fall in love and dream of a better life beyond the long dirt road that winds through their impoverished town in rural Ohio.

That’s because the novel is patterned on Emiline’s own dark and desperate childhood, which means that “J. Colby” must be Jase: the best friend and first love she hasn’t seen in over a decade. Far from being flattered that he wrote the novel from her perspective, Emiline is furious that he co-opted her painful past and took some dramatic creative liberties with the ending.

The only way she can put her mind at ease is to find and confront “J. Colby,” but is she prepared to learn the truth behind the fiction?

Good…. something-ish, As I yawn into my brew of coffee that steaming to the cold misty air, I realise I haven’t felt a severe book hangover like I have right now in a long time and it’s all because of Swear on This Life by Renée Carlino. I’m in the depths of an emotional swamp barely computing anything but the aroma of my coffee as I slurp in big gulps of caffeine after finishing Swear on This Life. I somehow pulled myself out of bed just minutes ago after finishing reading at about 2am-ish to my bodies screaming cry that it’s to early. My heart needs to mend about the emotional marathon it just walk, jogged and skipped through but I’m here to say every moment in this life I have changed for the better when I read Swear on This Life.

Friendship is something I never take for granted because I know at the darkest burrows of pain love and friendship can be the saving grace and in Renée Carlino’s latest work Swear in This life a deeply emotional connection was created between not only the characters themselves but the writing and my heart. Carlino has this ability to pull the raw emotion from my heart and in Emiline and Jase’s story I felt an uncanny connection these characters. The story dug deep into the route of hardships teenagers can sometimes face and my heart bleed with sadness through silent tears of pain for Emiline and Jase’s as I related to the characters on a deeper level than I can fathom to describe.

This story is one I will never forget, it captured my heart word after word, page after page, chapter after chapter until the very last sentence. The formulation of how Carlino wrote Emiline’s past and how it wept through the pages of a bestselling novel by a perplexing and enigmatic author, J. Colby was spell bounding to read and to do my papers.  The pages of a bestselling novel held the key to a locked door of emotions Emiline has buried and worked so hard to better herself from and the connection from the past to now twelve years in the future hold the story from the dawn of book to the dusk of the night falls ending words.

Swear on This Life captured my heart and I’m forever grateful to the journey I was able to experience with these characters.  Renée Carlino is an author I timelessly will forever be a fan of. The second chance raw emotional romances hit deep to my heart and always leave me with a heart felt of love yet so much emotion. I swear on this life nothing is greater than finishing a book like I did early this morning and having the feeling of not being able to function until you pours words of emotion onto a document that was blank to begin with and hopefully they make a good statement as to why you a human, reader, romance lover, romance hater,  should pick up Renée Carlino’s latest emotional and beautifully written work because it will leave you a powerful imprint on your heart you can never remove.
