Book Review: Second Hearts – G.J Walker-Smith

Hi lovelies,

Today’s review is going to be on Second Hearts by GJ Walker Smith. First of all if you haven’t read the first book Saving Wishes, it is recommended you read it before reading Second Hearts. This will contain some spoilers, but I will keep them to a minimum (hopefully).

Have no fear.. the second book of the series, delivers so much it will have you jumping up and down. I was just as excited for the first book as I probably was for the second, if not more for the second because I love all things GJ Walker-Smith writes. I have been sucked into this world of Adam and Charli through no fault of my own, it’s the characters fault they are just so lovable. As with any series the feel to Second Hearts changes a bit, as with the development of any narrative. Magic and romance have been the true loves I have found through the first novel and again the second.

We begin the journey with Charli in Kaimte, where at the end of Saving Wishes we left off. The beginning chapter look at Charli and what has changed in the past year to where she in now. After some loving advice from Mitchell, Charli decides she is going to head to New York because Adam is where her heart lies. In Second Hearts we see Charli take all the risks and take the leaps of faith that I know I have wanted her to take. Fate however, doesn’t allow Charli to land on her feet straight away like if she was in the clouds of La La Land.

I know the thing I personally love about Charli is her ability to charm the world with facts about fairies, shells and wishes. Second Hearts changes Charli and I find this is where Charli develops a strong mind-set of who she is. Charli moving across the world is confronting, because she is in a different strange unknown city alone to begin with. It may sound like I am not telling you anything but trust me, the details you want to read yourself.

I found Second Hearts made my emotions go around in circles at some points, there were points when Charli and Adam were together I want to scream Hallelujah from the hills, but other times where I felt so deeply sad. The good thing about the curveballs in Second Hearts is that there is reward. As a reader you do see Charli becoming her own, you do see the edition of one of my now favourite characters like Ryan throughout the novel. (If you have read, what actor do you think would fit Ryan perfectly?)

In many ways Saving Wishes and Second Hearts compel a similar narrative, however we now see how Charli fits into Adam’s life, instead of the other way round. In Second Hearts the difference of having Charli is Adam’s life seemingly makes a huge impact on the personalities and the qualities of the characters. In the novel we try to see Charli fit in a city that isn’t like a lock and key from the same door. Charli has sacrificed everything for Adam, coming to New York which reminds me a little about myself in away and the things we do for the people we love. Second Hearts plays a lot to what Adam wants, he wants the girl; she is there, he wants to continue with the internship; he does. I love Adam so much, and I understand where he is coming from, so that is why this book played with my feelings to each character a lot, and I did love it.

I have to say Charli is my favourite character, it’s just a fact. Her strength, whimsical spirit and ability to see things in such a magical light is what amazes me every time I read. I think the difference between Saving Wishes, Adam and Second Hearts, Adam is that he is in his element he knows the city, but he also knows Charli. Adam is trying to be realistic about the future, however it does turn out differently than he thought it would.

All in all, If you haven’t read the series, I highly recommend it. Its whimsical, charming and is a great read. The series continues on from Second Hearts with Storm Shells and Secret North.

P.S You may need a box of tissues.. :)

Till Next Time
